Calling all teen bands. Get ready to rock this town!!! The Robbins Library wants you to share your talent with us at our annual Battle of the Bands event.

Event Date: Tuesday, August 3rd (rain date August 10th)
Time: 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Where: behind the library on the Whittemore Robbins House lawn

Make a demo CD of your band and hand it in with your application to be one of four bands selected this summer. Submissions are due by Saturday, June 12 at the Robbins Library reference desk (700 Massachusetts Avenue). We will announce the winning bands on Saturday, June 19.

Application is located under "Important Links" to the right of this post!

We’re looking for bands that exhibit musicianship, professionalism, stage presence and originality. At least one band member must be an Arlington resident. Band members must be between the ages of 11 and 18. Band members must be available for both the scheduled date and the rain date (August 3rd and 10th ). Please be sure to hand in a demo CD, contact information including band members’ names, phone numbers and emails with your application.

Share your talents at the library. Join us as we feature two young artists each month (to be announced). Bring your own poem, short skit, stand up comedy act (appropriate), your own band, music or songs and come share your art with others. We will have some instruments set up on stage including electric, bass and acoustic guitars, a drum set and a piano at the Fox Branch Library event. Sign up to perform at the event.

This six-week class will be held from 3:30 PM to 5:00PM

Joy Spadafora, Arlington resident Knitter and Knitting Instructor, will walk you through casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, binding off and reading patterns. You'll work on easy and functional projects like a bookmark, ball, headband, or stuffed sheep! Ages 9-14. Space is limited. Registration begins February 11th.

Create a video game and challenge your friends! Participants will be introduced to the basic programming concepts involved in creating a 2-dimensional computer game. Using a step-by-step tutorial, participants will learn about sprites, objects and events as they create a working game. Game files can be downloaded to play at home and share with friends and family. The topic will be team F1 racing. For teens in 6th through 8th grade. SPACE IS LIMITED!

If you are entering grades 6th-12th go to:

Click “Sign Me Up” and make an account. You will need your library card barcode.

Set a reading goal and a program goal. How many hours do you want to spend reading and how many programs do you want to attend this summer?

Log in each week to record your time spent reading and/or the programs you attended.
-For every 2 hours you read you will be entered in a raffle.
-For every program you attend you will be entered in a raffle.
-For every review you write and share online, you will also be entered in a raffle.

Teen Tech Tutors!

Are you a high school student who would like to share your computer expertise with Arlington adults and earn community service credits? Join Robbins Library's core of "Teen Tech Tutors" who will offer free one-on-one computer training on Thursday mornings July 10 through August 7, 10-11a.m. and 11 a.m.-12 noon in the Robbins Library Reference Room. Teens must commit to at least two Thursday mornings. Training will be offered by library staff on Thursday, July 9, 10-11:30 a.m. in the Community Room. Fill out an application at the Reference Desk or print a copy from "important links" and drop it off at the Reference Desk.
